About Us

"If cost was not the driving factor, how would you design the ultimate pressure-relieving bed?"

I Used to Suffer From Lower-Back Pain

For years, my back pain and stiffness would cause enough discomfort to wake me up. It wasn’t excruciating pain but was just enough discomfort that I couldn’t go back to sleep. I'd lay in bed thinking to myself, if I could just alleviate this pressure I’m feeling in my lower back, I could keep sleeping.

At the time I was the co-founder and CEO of American Leather, a high-end upholstered furniture manufacturer and traveled a lot. I'd stay at a variety of hotels that resulted in a wide range of effects. Some stays would leave me with no back pain or stiffness while others would make me feel worse; the standard mattresses were yielding dire results. I learned that the subtle differences in mattress types — from the kinds of springs to foam, etc. — could have a dramatic effect on comfort, pain relief and sleep quality.

I Went on a Mission to Find the Perfect Bed

After ending up owning just about every type of mattress in the market I discovered that there was no guarantee that it would also be perfect for my wife, or that the ideal mattress when sleeping on my back would also be ideal when sleeping on my side. Moreover, there was no guarantee that it would be the perfect mattress for "future" me. Since our circumstances change so do our needs. The same, perfect bed when I was 40 and 190 lbs with a stiff back likely wasn't the perfect bed at 50 and 200lbs with a bad hip.

This led me to the idea, "If I could somehow adjust the firmness of every spring in the bed, continuously, using an intelligent algorithm, then I could eliminate pressure points regardless of changes in my body (position, weight, etc.)."

How We Did It

Engineering Intelligent-Comfort

"I genuinely felt that there was a similar market for an uncompromising, ultra-engineered, high-end smart bed."

To Make Something

To make something that can be sold in the mass market, even the luxury end of the mass market, you have to target a comfort level for an “average” user. Unfortunately, very few people are actually “average”. A handful of mass market beds in today's marketplace allow the user a fair degree of control over firmness and pressure regulation, however, they are all pneumatic "air bladder" systems. While affording the ease of affecting firmness through inflating or deflating, they simply lack the plush rebound and pushback that true springs provide under compression. Since my goal was somewhat more personal, I wondered, “If cost was not the driving factor, how would you design the ultimate pressure-relieving bed?"

The Approach

Our approach ended up being very similar to that of ultra high-end, automotive or aerospace companies where they don’t compromise on technology or luxury, with the result being truly amazing products. I genuinely felt that there was a similar market for an uncompromising, ultra-engineered, high-end smart bed. Taking this approach allowed us to optimize almost every aspect of our pressure-relieving smart bed. With cost not being our driving factor, we were able to contemplate a design that used true mattress springs, rather than inflatable “air bladders”, even though it was much more difficult.

The Result

The finished design is a precision-engineered smart bed built around a matrix of 400 independently controlled smart springs in a king-size layout. Each spring behaves like its own “pixel,” working autonomously to create an almost infinitely adjustable pressure profile. Most importantly, it delivers on its core promise: elevating comfort and sleep, the fundamental driver of wellbeing, recovery, and enduring health.
